Background

Healthy rivers are vital to Myanmar. In Myanmar, 34 million people depend on the Ayeyarwady River. Due to a lack of regulation and adequate infrastructure, every day tons of industrial wastewater ends up into Myanmar’s rivers. The food and beverage sector – one of Myanmar’s biggest industries – contributes significantly to this issue.

The project

Tha Bar Wa project promotes cleaner production, conserving natural resources, contributing to people’s wellbeing, promoting innovation, and helping industries to mitigate risks, cut costs, and reduce water and energy use. One key component of the project is supporting businesses in installing wastewater treatment plants. Tha Bar Wa also supports the government in establishing more effective and business-friendly environmental regulations, in particular in cooperation with the Environmental Conservation Department (ECD) of the MONREC and domestic financial institutions.

About the organization

WWF is the world’s leading conservation organization. It has been in existence for over 60 years and has offices in 100 countries. Its mission is to protect forests and rivers, ensure a future for endangered wildlife, and end pollution.

Though we have already seen the demise of some of the world’s great rivers, Myanmar still features freshwater ecosystems that are intact. It is critical that we make smart decisions now to safeguard the lifeblood arteries of this country, before it’s too late.

U Tin Win , Managing Director, Silver Pearl Dairy Products (Ngwe Sin Pearl)  “Due to the newly built wastewater treatment plant, we can efficiently treat wastewater in a way that's not harmful to the environment. This effort has a positive effect on my business—it improves hygiene and reduces our environmental impact. Thanks to this, we are proud of working in our factory. It motivates my staff to do better every day. Although we already have a certain level of recognition in the market, we are now confident that we will improve our brand image by building a wastewater treatment plant and becoming more responsible. I’m confident that this initiative will be rewarding.”
